単結晶にX線を照射すると回折像が得られます．この回折点の強度を数千個測定し，それぞれの位相を決定することにより分子を１億倍に拡大して観察することができます．顕微鏡の対物レンズにあたる部分は４軸回折計，接眼レンズにあたる部分はコンピュータです．物理化学領域でコンピュータの恩恵を受けた典型的な分野です．
